Watch: Red Sox’s Trevor Story gets emotional after suffering season-ending shoulder injury
Jason Parkhurst-USA TODAY Sports

The last thing anyone connected to the Boston Red Sox wanted was this. On Tuesday, an emotional Trevor Story  informed that he has fractured his shoulder and will need surgery which brings an end to his 2024 campaign.

The 31-year-old pitcher got injured this past Friday when he played against the Los Angeles Angels. While trying to field a ground ball hit by Mike Trout, the infielder was seen writhing in pain when he touched the ground. He was thus taken to the dugout for treatment and did not came back in the game.

While appearing in front of the media wearing an arm sling, Story informed that he knew the moment he landed on the ground that the injury was bad. He would later describe this pain as something he had never felt in his life.

I knew it was bad at the moment, as soon as I heard it come out. Just the pain I felt, I had never felt anything like that. Trevor Story said

As he continued to speak about his injury, the MLB star started to get emotional and tried to hold back his tears.

Missing last season, you feel that. You miss your teammates. You miss playing the game. You just know what it takes. I’ll be all right. Trevor Story said

In a sad end to his 2024 campaign, Story managed to play just eight games and had just four RBIs as he went 7-for-31. He did bat with a .226 average and was hoping to become an important member of the team as the tried to overcome the disappointments from last season.

Trevor Story signing starting to haunt Boston Red Sox

There have been some contract signing in MLB that have not been able to match the expectations placed on them. A major reason for this for has been injuries to players. While the debate regarding whether whose contract was worse – Stephen Strasburg‘s with the Washington Nationals or Anthony Rendon‘s with the Los Angeles Angels continues, Trevor Story’s contract is now starting to haunt the Boston Red Sox.

In 2022, the Boston Red Sox signed Story on a six-year, $140 million deal. This came as a surprise to many as the team signed the shortstop despite having the services of Xander Bogaerts. He would go on to play in 94 games that year as he missed some portion of the season due to an elbow injury.

The start of 2023 saw the burden increase on him as Bogaerts left for the San Diego Padres. Unfortunately, Story buckled under the pressure as he got injured again and played in just 43 games. With his 2024 season already over, Story will have played in just 145 games in his three seasons at the Boston-based side.

The injuries have taken a toll on his skills and abilities as well. His power and speed are reported to have been decreased since leaving the Colorado Rockies. The fans of the Red Sox are now praying for his speedy recovering and hoping he can avoid ending up like Strasburg and Rendon.
