What Exactly Are Phillies Doing With Kody Clemens?
Kyle Ross-Imagn Images

Even though the Philadelphia Phillies haven't had any injuries since Opening Day, it may seem like they've been playing shorthanded.

That's because utility man Kody Clemens, who made the club right at the end of spring training, has not entered a game since the first series of the year.

Clemens has appeared just twice, pinch hitting for Kyle Schwarber and Johan Rojas in the ninth innings of two seperate contests. He grounded out to first on March 29th and drew a walk on the 30th. Clemens has not spent a moment in the field so far.

While some bench players do get used sparingly, Kody is basically just taking up a roster spot... and it's unclear why.

It'd be one thing if the Philadelphia lineup was in rhythm and manager Rob Thomson didn't want to disrupt it, but that isn't the case. Third baseman Alec Bohm is hitting under .200. So is outfielder Brandon Marsh, who isn't showing that he can be the club's everyday center fielder. While Edmundo Sosa has filled in all over the diamond this year, he can't be everywhere at once.

Additionally, star Bryce Harper hasn't had any time off from first base yet. Clemens has experience at first, second, third, and left field. He's not a total liability at the plate either - Kody hit .239 in games he started last season and .327 overall in spring camp.

It's possible that the Phillies are being extra cautious with Clemens and are planning to trade him once Weston Wilson - who was injured back at the start of camp - completes his rehab assignment. But even if that is true, the Phils' regulars could use some relief while in the middle of 16 consecutive games without a day off.

We'll see if Clemens finally cracks Thomson's lineup in the series finale with the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday afternoon at 2:15 EST.
