What to Expect from Athletics Infielder Tommy White

Per ESPN, Athletics corner infielder Tommy White will be promoted to the Majors when the second half of the 2026 season begins. The move follows a familiar trend, as the club previously promoted Zack Gelof, Tyler Soderstrom, and Jacob Wilson to make their debuts after the break. But in the interim, White will be called upon to fill out an injury-depleted infield.

A Look at White

Tommy White, affectionately known as “Tommy Tanks” during his college career, was one of the most accomplished D1 hitters during this decade.

As a freshman, White hit 27 home runs for the NC State Wolfpack in 2022. He then transferred to LSU and hit .374 with 24 home runs for the 2023 LSU championship team. White slashed .330/.401/.638 with 24 home runs before he was picked in the second round by the A’s in 2024.

White’s first full pro season, which was last year, went very well. Even though there were a lot of groundballs, White was very consistent when it came to making contact, a penchant of his game that we’ll get to more in a second. The 23-year-old slashed .275/.334/.439 with 12 home runs and 35 extra-base hits. He finished in Double-A after spending most of 2025 with Lansing.

After White hit .301 over 21 contests with Double-A Midland, he earned a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas. And that’s when the power numbers surged, as White popped nine home runs across 55 contests (7.0% Barrel%) with the Aviators. His last month in Vegas went very well, as White finished third in the PCL in total hits (31) and tied for fourth in home runs (6).

White has fast hands and is direct to the ball, and he can get to pitches deep in the zone. When looking at his swing-and-miss numbers, it’s impressive to see just what White was able to do at the Triple-A level.

He posted a sub-20% Whiff% on all pitches except sweepers and curveballs. Only 14.5% of fastballs got past him with Las Vegas.

One drawback to White’s game is that while he makes a ton of contact, he doesn’t walk a whole lot. The 23-year-old will regularly expand the strike zone, although he won’t do so as much on velocity compared to breaking balls.

When White was a college player, the big question was what position he would play at the pro level. The 23-year-old didn’t demonstrate particularly great range with LSU. And in 77 contests at third last year, White made 18 errors at the position.

This year, White split his time between first and third base.

The Athletics do not have Tommy White on the 40-man roster as of this writing.

Analysis

White becomes the latest prospect to join the Athletics’ big-league roster. His former teammate at LSU, Gage Jump, made his MLB debut earlier this year. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer, in the same draft as both Jump and White, also debuted. As did Henry Bolte, who’s fit in well thus far in the Athletics’ outfield.

There’s room for White at the big-league level right now, as the A’s are dealing with depth problems. Zack Gelof and Nick Kurtz are currently on the IL. Darrel Hernaiz and Max Muncy, the latter of whom slashed .227/.303/.396 in the first half, are in the Minors.

With all of that considered, it opens up a door for White to prove he can fit in as a big-league player. The bat is good enough, although it remains to be seen where White fits in defensively in the long term.
