What to Expect from Brewers Pitcher Logan Henderson

The Brewers are dipping into their reserves to add depth to their Major League pitching staff. Milwaukee promoted Logan Henderson, a former fourth-round pick who showcased very good stuff over the years in the Brewers’ farm system. And recently, got off to a very good start with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.

A Look at Henderson

The 2021 MLB Draft has the potential to be a big one down the road for the Brewers. Not only did Milwaukee land outfielder Sal Frelick (1st) and a potential on-base machine in Tyler Black (CB-A) but also pitcher Logan Henderson.

Henderson was a fourth-round pick out of McLennan Community College in Texas. However, Henderson was sidelined in 2022 thanks to elbow surgery, as he made just seven starts. The right-hander was humming along in 2023-24, as he averaged over a strikeout per inning, posted a sub-1.00 WHIP in both years, and didn’t have an opponent’s batting average above .199 in either season.

Henderson was off to a hot start with Nashville (AAA) to begin 2025. The right-hander struck out 24 over 14 frames with Sounds, second-most in the International League. Only Spencer Strider, on a rehab assignment with Gwinnett, had more strikeouts in the International than Henderson.

When looking at Henderson’s whiff map, a trend is pretty obvious. The right-hander loves to work hitters to the arm side, between his low-to-mid-90s fastball and an equally good changeup.

The 23-year-old can generate a lot of induced movement on the four-seamer. While in Nashville, Henderson averaged 16.9” IVB on the four-seamer, which can top out at 95 MPH but sits comfortably in the 92-93 MPH range. And it plays, as the four-seamer had a high Whiff% of 34.6% in Triple-A.

Henderson’s changeup, meanwhile, was a weapon that worked all over the strike zone and out of it, whether in on lefties as a comebacker or to the arm side. It had good arm side run, making it tough for opposing hitters to decipher where it was going.

Aside from those pitches, Henderson can work hitters horizontally with either his high-80s cutter with riding action, coupled with a slower slider.

Analysis

It’ll be interesting to see how exactly Henderson fits into the Brewers’ short-term plans.

Milwaukee’s had trouble in the interim filling out their rotation to begin 2025. Yes, Freddy Peralta has been excellent. Peralta struck out 28 over 23.1 IP and posted a 2.31 ERA, both excellent figures.

However, Nestor Cortes is hurt, Brandon Woodruff is rehabbing, and the Brewers have relied on Tyler Alexander, Chad Patrick, and Elvin Rodriguez — who was sent down to make room for Henderson — to make multiple starts this season. Not to mention, Quinn Priester, who was acquired from the Red Sox earlier this month.

Right now, Patrick looks like a keeper in the short term to slot in alongside Peralta and Jose Quintana. Patrick has a nice carrying cutter to complement the four-seamer, along with a sinker, changeup, and slider to keep hitters off balance. To this point, the righty’s been fine, as he struck out 13 over 15.2 IP and posted a strong 30.3% Chase%.

Alexander, meanwhile, has had his ups and downs in the Brewers’ rotation. Most recently, the lefty gave up six hits and three walks against the Tigers in an ugly loss on April 14.

If the Brewers want to use Henderson as a starter, he’s stretched out.
