Over the last five years, the Mariners have done a strong job of identifying and developing amateur pitchers. One of the Mariners’ latest projects, Logan Evans, will get his MLB debut on April 27, almost two years after Seattle drafted him in the 12th round.
Former Pittsburgh hurler Logan Evans was off to a hot start in Tacoma (AAA) to begin 2025. Evans struck out 23 batters — the 12th-most in the Pacific Coast League — across 25.2 IP and walked just four. It marked another turn for the 23-year-old right-hander, who went from unheralded prospect to MLB arm.
Evans spent the first two years of his college career at Penn State before transferring in-state to join the ACC’s Pittsburgh Panthers. The right-hander had his best season in 2023, the year Seattle drafted him in the 12th round and signed him for $100,000. However, it wasn’t eye-popping, as he owned a 5.88 ERA and struck out 42 over 49 frames.
He performed very well out of the gate, as Evans posted a .60 ERA over five starts in 2023. Then, in 2024, opposing batters hit just .217 off Evans, as he struck out 98 over 107 frames. However, he walked a lot of batters, with 42 in Double-A last season.
Dating back to his college days, Evans’ batted-ball profile skewed towards ground balls. That remained true in the Minors, as Evans posted a career 1.33 GO/AO and 1.83 with the Rainiers.
It’s not a shock to see those kinds of numbers. Evans can pound hitters with a mid-90s sinker with, on average, over two inches better (4.6” IVB in 2025) sinking action than the league average. Evans’ sinker sits in the 92-95 MPH range, and he’ll pair it with a changeup with separation, a cut/slider, and a sweeper that pairs very well with his sinker.
Additionally, Evans will break out a four-seamer, keeping in line with a common theme nowadays: sinkerballers using a four-seamer to work hitters up in the zone and keep hitters honest.
Per the Mariners, Logan Evans will start on April 27 against the Mariners. It’ll mark Evans’ MLB debut.
Evans stated he’s grown as a pitcher, becoming more of a “pitcher” compared to a “thrower” and learning how to manage batters. Seattle will hope Evans puts his learning to good use, as the Mariners have a need for starting pitching for the near future.
Staff ace Logan Gilbert was placed on the IL with a mild right flexor strain and shut down for at least the next two weeks. George Kirby, meanwhile, has been dealing with shoulder inflammation and hasn’t thrown a pitch in the Majors this season.
Still, the Mariners’ pitching staff has been a key reason Seattle has been competitive in 2025 (well, aside from their offense, which ended play on the 26th with the most runs scored in the AL West). Bryan Woo struck out 30 over his first 32 innings pitched, while Luis Castillo tossed six scoreless innings on the 26th to lower his ERA to 3.62.
By giving Evans the start on the 27th, it gives the Mariners the short-term benefit of giving their other starters, including Bryce Miller, more recovery time. And, it’ll give Seattle the chance to see what Evans can do now.
