Despite what’s been a tough season overall for Baltimore, the O’s have several young bats in the farm that could keep the Orioles’ playoff window open for years to come. One of those names is Dylan Beavers, one of the Orioles’ 2022 MLB Draft picks. Baltimore officially selected the 24-year-old on August 16, giving him a late-season look.
Thirty-two picks after the Orioles selected Jackson Holliday with the first overall pick in 2022, Baltimore picked college outfielder Dylan Beavers. Beavers, now 24 years of age, has steadily progressed since then.
Beavers hit .322 in his brief taste of pro ball that year. He then posted a .850 OPS in 2023, thanks to a .383 on-base percentage and 52 extra-base hits. Last season, spent mostly in Double-A, he slashed .242/342/.408 (.750 OPS) with 40 extra-base hits. Beavers stole 31 bases, a career-best, and played six games towards the end in Triple-A.
The 24-year-old did very well in his second stint in Triple-A. Across 94 games with Norfolk (AAA), Beavers slashed .304/.420/.515 (.935 OPS) with 18 home runs and 34 extra-base hits.
Beavers put up strong numbers overall in August, as he blasted four home runs, along with a 14:12 K:BB ratio, across 11 games with Norfolk. And in total, the 24-year-old left the International League ninth in total hits (104), and tied with now-Marlin Jakob Marsee for second in walks (68).
Over the past few years, the Orioles have leaned heavily on players with at least one plus quantifiable tool. Beavers, though, is more of a jack of all trades. However, one area that an analytically-friendly team like the Orioles has to like is his approach. Namely, swing decisions and the ability to put the ball in play.
Stat | 2025 Rate |
---|---|
Whiff% | 19.5% |
Chase% | 20.2% |
In-Zone Whiff% | 12.9% |
Fastball Whiff% | 13.5% |
Slider/Sweeper Whiff% | 13.9% |
Beavers did a relatively good job at making contact on pitches in the zone and driving the ball with authority throughout his Minor League career.
Defensively, Beavers has worked primarily as a corner outfielder, seeing most of his time in right field. He did get 13 games of work at first in 2024 with Bowie (AA). However, Beavers didn’t play a single game there this season.
The Orioles officially selected Dylan Beavers on August 16. Baltimore DFA’d Greg Allen in a corresponding move.
The Orioles’ outfield looks significantly different from it did on Opening Day. Colton Cowser and Tyler O’Neill are hurt, while Cedric Mullins (Mets), Ramon Laureano, and Ryan O’Hearn (Padres) were all moved at the deadline.
It made sense for the Orioles, at some point between the deadline and the end of 2025, to promote Beavers. He was Rule 5 eligible and hit well in Triple-A. Aside from Beavers, the only two other regular outfielders on the O’s roster are Daniel Johnson and Dylan Carlson (Ryan Noda has a small sample size of outfield experience, including five games with the Orioles).
And, now that August 16 has arrived, Beavers can remain on Baltimore’s roster for the rest of the season without exhausting 45 days of MLB service — and thus, losing 2026 Rookie of the Year eligibility.
Beavers now has a chance to prove he can stick and be a piece not just for the rest of 2025 but 2026 & beyond. For fantasy owners, Beavers’ skillset gives him the potential to be an asset late in the season, as well.
