What to Make of Mariners’ Extension of Colt Emerson

One day after reports that Cooper Pratt was on the verge of signing a massive extension before his MLB debut, the Mariners reportedly locked up their top prospect, Colt Emerson, to a much larger one. It’ll reportedly be an eight-year deal worth roughly $95MM, locking up another player for the future.

A Look at Emerson

The Mariners made Colt Emerson a first-round pick nearly three years ago out of high school in 2023. Since then, he’s turned into one of baseball’s best infield prospects.

Emerson hit .375 (1.045 OPS) in limited action that year between the ACL and Low-A after the draft. In an injury-shortened 2024 season, Emerson slashed .263/.393/.376 with four home runs and 22 extra-base hits over 70 contests.

Last year was Emerson’s big breakthrough year. The 20-year-old slashed .285/.383/.458 with 16 home runs, 50 extra-base hits, and 14 stolen bases across 130 contests. He started the year in High-A and finished it in Triple-A. Across three games with Tacoma in 2026, Emerson had a home run and two extra-base hits.

But this past spring, Emerson showed what he could do at the highest stage. His numbers were fine in the Cactus League, as Emerson slashed .268/.340/.488 with two home runs and four extra-base hits over 18 contests.

From an offensive standpoint, there is a lot to like about Emerson. A quick bat and strong, Emerson can drive the ball with authority. He got on top of the ball more in High-A, even though he technically had more power to show for it in the Northwest League last season. There, he posted a GB% over 50%.

There’s also the walks. Emerson walked 71 times over 600 plate appearances, although the vast majority of those came in High-A. His BB% dipped below 10% with Double-A Arkansas and to 9% in Triple-A last season in a six-game sample size.

The 20-year-old’s quick bat does help in the contact department. He was one of the best contact hitters in the Northwest League last season. He finished his time there with a sub-20% Whiff%, good for a top 10 finish in that category. As expected, that swing-and-miss rate crept up in advanced ball, as we noted in our Mariners’ 2025 farm review.

During the spring, the contact skills (15.3% Whiff%) were on full display, particularly on velocity (10% Whiff% on four-seam fastballs). However, what was also on display was his tendency to expand out of the zone.

It doesn’t get him in trouble too much, as Emerson made consistent contact on outside pitchers. However, it may very well result in more muted walk numbers at the MLB level.

Defensively, Emerson has spent the vast majority of his time at short, with some time spent at second and third. Rangy defender at the position.

Analysis

The Mariners’ future is coming into view.

With Emerson presumably locked up for at least the next eight years (his deal also comes with a club option and escalators), it gives the Mariners a locked-up core between Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez, both of whom are already under long-term deals.

Obviously, this one is different. Both Raleigh and Rodriguez signed their deals after the two showed that they are superstar talents. Emerson hasn’t had that opportunity to do so yet, although he will once the deal is finalized.

At the very least, Emerson has shown the potential to be a high-floor player who doesn’t strike out a lot. However, the ceiling is very high. Think 20-20 with the ability to impact the game both in the field and at the plate.

Shortstops and infielders in general who do that cost a lot. Which is why getting ahead of things isn’t a bad idea, so long as the team is sure that they have.

And, Emerson could be the first of that next wave of young Mariners talent, which could also include Lazaro Montes and Michael Arroyo, two other notable Seattle prospects.
