When Mets' Clay Holmes Will Begin His Rehab Assignment

This is good news for both the New York Mets and contending teams ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

Starting pitcher Clay Holmes is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Saturday for High-A Brooklyn, according to The Athletic.

Holmes threw a live bullpen session on Tuesday and is now deemed ready to go for minor league game action.

The expectation is that several teams will be on-hand to scout Holmes' rehab start on Saturday for Brooklyn.

Holmes, 33, has been out since May 15 due to a fractured fibula, which was suffered on a comebacker against the New York Yankees. Prior to getting injured, Holmes pitched like an ace, producing a 2.39 ERA across his first nine starts of the season.

Holmes, who has a $12 million player option for 2027, is one of the Mets' most attractive trade chips ahead of the deadline.

Holmes, a former All-Star closer with the Yankees, signed a three-year, $38 million deal with the Mets to become a starter in the 2024-2025 offseason. The righty has since shattered all expectations.

In his first year with the Mets in 2025, Holmes went 12-8 with a 3.53 ERA over a career-high 165.2 innings.

If healthy, Holmes should be able to help a contender's starting rotation down the stretch of the season as 23 different MLB teams are pushing for a playoff spot currently.

Should the Mets decide to hang on to Holmes, they could look to sign him to a contract extension before he potentially opts out of his deal in the winter.

Holmes could be a key piece in the Mets' rotation in 2027 and beyond. He would join the youth movement of Nolan McLean, Christian Scott and Zack Thornton.

It has been a nightmare season for the Mets, who are 41-57 and fired manager Carlos Mendoza in late June.

The Mets are destined to be sellers at the trade deadline and Holmes is one of their best pieces that they can dangle on the market.
