
Noah Schultz’s development has been one of the Chicago White Sox organization’s top priorities since he was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft. At 6-foot-9 with a mid-90s fastball and a unique delivery, Schultz has long been viewed as a potential cornerstone of the club’s future rotation.
Schultz has made 12 major league starts for a White Sox team that finds itself in the middle of an unexpected American League Central race. His promotion has naturally raised the same question most pitching prospects eventually face: Is he ready?
Schultz’s workload throughout the minors was deliberately managed. That wasn’t unusual given his age, size and injuries, nor was it necessarily the wrong approach. The White Sox prioritized long-term health over accumulating innings. The progression, however, never resembled that of a traditional starting pitcher.
Throughout 2024, Schultz averaged roughly four innings per outing. He rarely faced a lineup a third time, and frequently pitched on extended. Double-A represented the first real step toward becoming a conventional starter.

His outings gradually stretched deeper into games, pitch counts climbed into the low-80s and he finally began seeing hitters for a third plate appearance with some regularity.
Then that progression stalled.
An injury interrupted his 2025 season, and his Triple-A workload became abbreviated once again. Rather than spending several months carrying a traditional starter’s workload every fifth day, Schultz reached Chicago without ever completing a sustained stretch of consistently working deep into games while navigating upper-level lineups three times.
Development is rarely measured only by innings pitched. It is measured by repetition. Building routines between starts. Learning how hitters adjust over multiple trips through the lineup. Understanding which pitches continue to play in the sixth inning after an opponent has already seen them twice.
Schultz began that process. He simply never completed it before arriving in the majors.
Workload tells part of the story. The quality and construction of Schultz’s arsenal tells the rest.

Across 985 pitches thrown during his first 12 major league starts, one theme consistently emerged. His success depends less on overwhelming stuff than many probably expected.
Standing 6-foot-9, Schultz looks like the prototype of a power left-hander capable of overpowering hitters with elite fastball characteristics. The pitch data paints a more nuanced picture.
His four-seam fastball averages approximately 95 mph, but its movement profile is closer to average than elite. It produces roughly 11.4 inches of induced vertical break and about 10.9 inches of arm-side movement. Combined with below-average extension despite his height, the pitch succeeds more through execution than pure physical characteristics.
None of that makes it a bad fastball. It simply means there is less margin for error.
Pitchers with elite ride can survive occasional mistakes above the strike zone. Pitchers with exceptional extension create additional perceived velocity. Schultz currently possesses neither advantage consistently enough to lean on them.
Instead, the fastball asks for precise command, quality sequencing and well-designed pitch tunnels. Those are skills that typically improve through experience.

The season-long averages become even more interesting when broken into segments. During April and May, Schultz’s four-seamer averaged more than 12 inches of induced vertical break.
Since returning from an IL stint in July, that figure has dropped below 10 inches.
Velocity has dipped only slightly, but the movement profile has become noticeably flatter. His three July starts produced the three lowest average induced vertical break readings of his season.
Whether that reflects mechanical adjustments, inconsistency, fatigue or another factor is impossible to determine from pitch data alone.
The trend itself is difficult to ignore.

The rest of Schultz’s arsenal reinforces that idea.
The sinker features significant arm-side movement, while the changeup follows a similar path at a different velocity. His sweeper creates separation in the opposite direction, giving the repertoire a distinctly horizontal shape.
Taken together, the pitch mix attacks hitters primarily from east to west. The lone pitch capable of creating consistent north-south separation is his curveball. He has thrown it fewer than two percent of the time.
That does not necessarily mean the curveball should become a featured pitch, but it illustrates where Schultz currently sits in his development. His arsenal is still evolving.
Pitchers often discover which offerings best complement one another only after facing major league hitters over an extended period.
Schultz is still in that phase.
Among Schultz’s six pitches, the sweeper has produced the best swing-and-miss results.
It owns the highest whiff rate in his arsenal and has consistently functioned as his primary put-away offering.
Even there, however, subtle changes have appeared.
The pitch has lost horizontal movement during his July starts compared with earlier in the season. The difference is not dramatic enough to fundamentally change the offering, but it follows the same general pattern seen with the four-seam fastball.
Small changes in movement matter.
At the highest level, an inch or two can be the difference between a swing over the top and a line drive into the gap.
One of the more common assumptions surrounding Schultz has been that fatigue causes his outings to unravel. The pitch-level data offers a more complicated picture.
Velocity remains relatively stable throughout his starts and there is no obvious point where his raw stuff suddenly disappears.
The effectiveness of that stuff, however, changes.

As Schultz works deeper into games, hitters generate fewer swings and misses. Called-strike-plus-whiff rates decline, particularly by the third trip through the order. His four-seam fastball, in particular, becomes far less effective at missing bats later in outings.
Those trends do not prove that Schultz cannot face hitters three times.
They do suggest he is still learning how to sequence his pitches, maintain deception and navigate lineups as opponents accumulate information.
That is precisely the developmental phase many pitchers spend months refining in Triple-A.
None of this should be interpreted as criticism of Schultz’s long-term outlook. If anything, the analysis reinforces why evaluators have remained so high on his ceiling.
He possesses size that cannot be taught, fastball velocity is more than sufficient, his sweeper already flashes as a legitimate major league weapon, and several other pitches show encouraging characteristics.
The question is not whether Schultz can become a successful major league starter, it is whether every part of that development needs to happen while pitching meaningful innings for a first-place club.
Those are different conversations. Had this season unfolded differently, Schultz’s path might be obvious.
A rebuilding team can afford to let a young pitcher learn almost exclusively through major league experience. The White Sox no longer occupy that position. Every game now carries postseason implications and every rotation spot influences a division race.
At the same time, Schultz is still refining how his arsenal fits together, adjusting to a five-day schedule and continuing the workload progression that never fully materialized in Triple-A.
Those objectives are not mutually exclusive, but they do not always point toward the same developmental environment.
None of the evidence presented here proves Noah Schultz should return to Charlotte. It does suggest the conversation deserves more nuance than simply labeling every outing as rookie growing pains.
The lefties workload through the minors was heavily managed, a traditional starter progression was interrupted before it fully matured, and his arsenal remains a work in progress.
The pitch data shows measurable areas that continue to evolve, from fastball shape to pitch usage to effectiveness deeper into games.
Viewed independently, each point is easy to explain away.
Viewed together, they paint the picture of a pitcher who is still completing his development.
Leaving Schultz in the major league rotation is a defensible choice. Sending him to Triple-A to continue refining his workload, sequencing and arsenal would also be defensible.
Neither decision changes his long-term outlook. What has changed is the environment.
The White Sox are no longer developing prospects in games without consequence. They’re trying to win the American League Central while one of their most talented young pitchers continues learning what kind of major league starter he is going to become.
