White Sox 6, Royals 5: Colson Montgomery’s Homer Lifts Chicago to Series Win and .500 Record

Colson Montgomery keeps coming through when it matters most.

The young shortstop blasted a solo home run in the seventh inning off John Schreiber that wound up powering the Chicago White Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night at Rate Field.

We all love insurance, and Montgomery delivered it with the Sox up 5-3 in the seventh inning on Wednesday night. Despite Bobby Witt Jr. doing his best to attempt to spoil the night with a two-run homer of his own in the ninth inning, the White Sox were able to lock it down and secure a series victory over Kansas City.

The win clinched the series for the White Sox and pushed them to 21-21, reaching the .500 mark for the first time this season. It’s also the first time the team has been .500 this late in the season since 2022.

While Montgomery’s seventh-inning blast was the decisive blow in a back-and-forth game, Jarred Kelenic added two RBIs, and Sam Antonacci delivered key hits and hustle plays throughout the night. Tyler Davis earned his first big-league win in relief, and Seranthony Dominguez slammed the door in the ninth for his 10th save, holding off a late Royals rally.

After the game, Montgomery spoke about what reaching .500 means to this team:

“It’s definitely something that we look at. You know as a competitor and a lot of us in here, you want to win, you want to be above .500. You want to see yourself at the top of the division and things like that. In our minds that’s where we feel like we should be.”

The White Sox have now won four straight games and 15 of their last 23, their best stretch of the young season. They currently sit just 1.5 games back in the AL Central and hold the second Wild Card Spot.

For a rebuilding club that has endured some brutal stretches in recent years, nights like this, where the young core steps up and the team finds a way to win over a divisional opponent, are exactly what fans have been waiting to see.
