White Sox dealt pitching injury blow amid postseason push

The Chicago White Sox will be without reliever Huascar Brazoban for at least the next two weeks after the team placed him on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left lat strain. The move comes as Chicago tries to build momentum following an 11-12 start to August.

Brazoban’s injury surfaced during Monday’s 11-2 loss to the Texas Rangers, when the right-hander worked one inning and surrendered one run and one hit. He was acquired from the New York Mets on Aug. 3 and has recorded a 6.30 ERA across 10 appearances with the White Sox. Overall this season, Brazoban has a 3.16 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 62.2 innings, but he has given up seven earned runs in 10 innings since joining the White Sox. His earliest possible return is Sept. 9.

Chicago recalled right-hander Jonathan Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte to fill Brazoban’s roster spot. Cannon has gone 5-6 with a 5.18 ERA in 17 starts and five relief appearances for Charlotte this season. He has also appeared once for the White Sox, walking three batters and allowing one run without logging an out in an April 12 outing against the Kansas City Royals.

Brazoban’s absence adds to a difficult stretch for the White Sox’s trade-deadline additions. Luis Castillo has a 5.89 ERA with Chicago and has completed five innings only once in four starts since arriving. Jose Urquidy has a 5.68 ERA with the team after being acquired in a minor-league trade before the deadline.

The White Sox also placed Andrew Benintendi on the bereavement/family medical emergency list Tuesday and recalled Rikuu Nishida from Charlotte. Benintendi, 32, is hitting .244 with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs through 116 games this season.
