White Sox Demote Player for Davis Martin's Activation

Davis Martin is back with the Chicago White Sox, giving the club a key rotation piece as it enters the final month of the regular season.

The White Sox activated Martin from the 15-day injured list Wednesday after the right-hander missed time with a blister on his right index finger. To make room, Chicago optioned rookie right-hander Tanner McDougal to Triple-A Charlotte.

The club announced the move through its official account on X, with Martin’s return coming as Chicago prepares to face the Houston Astros.

Prior to tonight’s game at Houston, the Chicago White Sox returned right-handed pitcher Davis Martin from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte, reinstated him from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-hander Tanner McDougal to Class AAA Charlotte.

Martin has been one of the more dependable pieces of Chicago’s rotation this season. Through 24 starts, he owns a 9-6 record with a 4.32 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 111 strikeouts over 125 innings.

His season has taken a different shape since a strong start, however. Martin carried a 1.61 ERA through May 16 before posting a 6.52 ERA over his next 15 starts.

McDougal’s demotion gives the rookie an opportunity to regroup after a difficult major league debut. He made his first appearance Aug. 13 against the Cincinnati Reds, recording one out while walking three and hitting a batter.

Martin’s return also comes at an important point for the White Sox. Chicago entered Wednesday at 73-65 and in first place in the American League Central, holding a three-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians.

The White Sox are scheduled to open a series against the Astros, who entered the day leading the AL West by one game over the Texas Rangers.

With the postseason race tightening, Chicago will hope Martin’s return provides stability to a rotation that has helped put the club in an unexpected position heading into September.
