Any excitement and momentum from the Chicago White Sox’s Opening Day rout of the Los Angeles Angels quickly faded over the weekend, as the team dropped its second straight game in the series on Sunday. Chicago fell 3-2 in a contest delayed nearly three hours due to heavy rain and hail at Rate Field.
Despite the loss, White Sox pitching allowed just one earned run while walking two batters and surrendering six hits. The infield turned three double plays, but a costly fielding error by shortstop Jacob Amaya led to two unearned runs in the first inning.
Right-hander Davis Martin worked through early trouble and settled in, tossing six innings while allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out two. Across the series, White Sox starters combined for 17 innings without allowing an earned run, while the pitching staff surrendered just three earned runs in total.
Martin navigated a jam in the sixth after Taylor Ward singled and advanced to second. Jorge Soler followed with a ground-rule double, holding Nolan Schanuel at third. With the go-ahead run in scoring position, Martin struck out Yoán Moncada to escape the inning unscathed.

The White Sox tied the game in the bottom of the second when designated hitter Nick Maton led off with a solo home run. Luis Robert Jr. later singled and scored on a two-out RBI single by catcher Matt Thaiss.
A lengthy rain delay halted play in the bottom of the seventh with one out after Lenyn Sosa doubled. Miguel Vargas faced a full count against Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn when the weather forced a stoppage.

Following the two-hour, 48-minute delay, Angels reliever Ben Joyce walked Vargas, then threw a wild pitch to put runners on second and third. However, the White Sox failed to capitalize as Brooks Baldwin flied out and Sosa popped out to end the threat.
In the top of the eighth, White Sox reliever Cam Booser surrendered a first-pitch home run to Kyren Paris, giving the Angels a 3-2 lead that held for the remainder of the game.
White Sox head groundskeeper Roger Boussard stated that he and his crew used over four tons of diamond dry to fix the field after the rain delay.
Roger Bossard used 4 1/2 tons of drying compound, which is 175 bags, to fix the field. He's in his 59th season as an industry icon and has never dealt with hail until today.
