With Opening Day just four days away, the Chicago White Sox made more roster moves as their 26-man squad takes shape. The club announced Sunday that it had released infielder Brandon Drury. They have also optioned right-handed reliever and real person Gus Varland to Triple-A Charlotte.
Drury and Varland were widely expected to make the team out of camp. Despite some control issues, Varland seemed like a lock following a stellar end to 2024. Drury, meanwhile, was the team’s top offensive performer in spring training but suffered a fractured thumb.

The White Sox have two candidates for the 60-day injured list. Their placement on the 60-day IL will open two spots on the 40-man roster, one of which could have been used to keep Drury while he recovered. However, given the length of his injury and his recent health concerns, the White Sox chose to release him instead.
Varland’s demotion initially caused some confusion, but the reasoning became clear following another roster move. The White Sox claimed starting pitcher Mike Vasil off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. Vasil, who pitched and struggled in Triple-A, prompting the Rays to move on.
In a corresponding move, the White Sox placed reliever Prelander Berroa on the 60-day IL to make room for Vasil. Berroa will miss the 2024 season after having Tommy John surgery.
The White Sox have taken multiple hits to their pitching depth, with Ky Bush and Juan Carela both lost for the season due to Tommy John surgery. Mason Adams is also sidelined with an elbow issue. All three were expected to be rotation options for Triple-A Charlotte.

To make room for Vasil on the 40-man roster, the White Sox placed right-hander Prelander Berroa on the 60-day injured list.
Chicago’s 40-man roster remains full, but Carela's addition to the 60-day IL will open another spot. That spot could go to right-hander Mike Clevinger, whom the White Sox are reportedly considering as a late-inning, high-leverage bullpen option. With these moves, a few roster questions remain ahead of Opening Day.
