White Sox Return Home, Drop Series Opener to Brewers 7-2 Despite Early Fireworks

Lefty Logic, Righty Regret

Bryse Wilson, working in bulk relief behind opener Tyler Gilbert (who, yes, has now started three of the last four games for Chicago), held the Brewers in check after the first inning homer by Isaac Collins.

In the sixth, Wilson ran into trouble after allowing Joey Ortiz to reach base on an infield single, steal second, and score on William Contreras' base hit. Collins, who walked, advanced to third on the play.

It prompted manager Will Venable to bring in lefty Brandon Eisert. 

Eisert struck out Christian Yelich, then intentionally walked Rhys Hoskins to load the bases for lefty Sal Frelick. That strategy backfired immediately, as Eisert plunked Frelick to bring in the go-ahead run. Caleb Durbin then punched a two-run single through the left side to give Milwaukee a 5-2 lead.

It didn't get better from there.

Jared Shuster allowed two more runs to score in the eighth after a bunt single, a hit-by-pitch, and a Miguel Vargas error loaded the bases. Jackson Chourio's infield single brought home one, and a groundout by Collins tacked on another.

After collecting three hits in the first inning, the White Sox managed just one more hit the rest of the night—a single from Vargas, plus three walks and a hit-by-pitch (shoutout to Edgar Quero for wearing one for the team).

News and Notes

• Infielder Josh Rojas began his rehab stint with AAA Charlotte and started at shortstop Tuesday night.

• General manager Chris Getz spoke to the media before the game and said the team expects Chase Meidroth to return later this week, with Rojas potentially rejoining the club the following week.

• Getz also praised the scorching-hot bat of Charlotte Knights first baseman Tim Elko, who's currently one of the hottest hitters in minor league baseball.

• Top prospect Colson Montgomery is heading to Arizona to work one-on-one with hitting director Kyle Fuller in hopes of resetting at the plate.
