White Sox Say the Funniest Things
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Many, many years ago, there were a couple of TV programs that highlighted the unpredictability of what kids might say. I believe both were called, Kids Say the Darndest Things. Well, kids aren’t alone. Members of the Chicago White Sox organization have also been known for some odd expressions.

It wasn’t that long ago Sox owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, dawned his leather jacket, a la Fonzie and went to Springfield to plead his case for a billion dollars to build a new home for his woebegone team. Not to be outdone, Sox manager. Pedro Grifol has entered the comedic fray.

No Wonder This Team Stinks

Basically, there is a strong statistical argument that Andrew Benintendi is the worst player in MLB. He’s been terrible at the plate and in the field as well as being average at best as a baserunner. Of course, that baserunning doesn’t come into play too much because Benintendi’s OBP of .218. His WAR is currently -1.9. What is stunning about that is not only has Benintendi been amazingly bad, but the fact that a team allows a guy who has been that bad to get regular playing time. But it gets more amazing.

Note what Grifol said about Benintendi: “Beni is a consistent pillar in our lineup.’

I recommend the Sox check that pillar for termite damage.

Pillars cost a lot of money

Not only has Benintendi been abysmal, but he’s also costly and abysmal. His contract of five years at $75 million is the largest in White Sox history. It actually hits both sides of the why the Sox stink equation. First of all, the fact that’s the largest contract in Sox history shows what a comedian Reinsdorf is. Second, the fact they chose to spend that kind of money on Benintendi says something about their major league scouting.

Of course, the fact Benintendi is considered a pillar of the Sox lineup is also a joke.

The baseball stupid just keeps happening

Nicky Lopez has played a lot of second base for the Sox and currently is carrying a WAR of -0.2. On the Sox that’s not bad. However, I wanted to see Zach Remillard get some time at second. And he got some over the weekend against the Yankees. And managed to get on base a couple of time. I know because he got picked off second and the later in the series got picked off third.

I know Zach isn’t that used to being on base, but that can’t happen. Unless you are with the White Sox. Zach may be on his way to being another pillar on the team.
