MLB's trade deadline is still over two months away, but a few early-season deals have already commenced. Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz got in on the action Wednesday by trading outfielder Robbie Grossman to the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor-league pitcher Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa.
Grossman returns to the club he won a World Series with last season after a short stint on the South Side. The veteran switch-hitter slashed .211/.329/.268 with four doubles in 85 plate appearances across 25 games with the White Sox to begin the 2024 season.
Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa was a 30th-round pick of the Rangers in the 2019 MLB Draft. Across parts of four seasons in Texas's system, he owns a 3.15 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 3.48 K/BB in 103 innings, all of which have come out of the bullpen.
The right-hander is off to an excellent start with Double-A Frisco this season. Hoopii-Tuionetoa touts a spotless ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts against four walks in 12.1 innings.
Anthony Hoopii-Tuionetoa isn't a big-league piece, so the White Sox filled Robbie Grossman's roster spot by selecting Zach Remillard's contract from Triple-A Charlotte.
Remillard notched one hit in two games for the White Sox earlier this season before being designated for assignment on April 22. The 30-year-old is slashing .114/.192/.157 with one double in 79 plate appearances with Charlotte this season.
