The Chicago White Sox announced that they have limited their Spring Training roster to 54 players, including 25 pitchers and 29 position players. Most notably, the team optioned one of their top prospects in Colson Montgomery (SS) to Triple-A Charlotte. Montgomery ranks as the 39th overall prospect, according to MLB.com. He held a .710 OPS across 130 games in Charlotte in 2024 and looks to bounce back from a rocky start.
In addition, the Sox optioned Nick Nastrini (RHP) and Owen White (RHP) to Triple-A. Tim Elko (IF) was reassigned to minor-league camp.
Nastrini will serve as a key depth piece for the starting rotation this season in the event of mass injuries. However, the young pitchers should get all the run this season for the White Sox. As for Montgomery, his ascent is the really intriguing watch.
Montgomery was once the bonafide top prospect in the Sox's system. However, the influx of talent via numerous trades over the last season or so has pushed Montgomery down to No. 4 in the pipeline. LHP Noah Schultz, C Kyle Teel, and LHP Hagen Smith all rank higher than the former first-round pick.
That said, Montgomery's ascent into an everyday shortstop would certainly help the White Sox return to prominence. Factor in his ascent with names like Teel, Edgar Quero, Brayden Montgomery, and the slew of pitchers, the White Sox could be a young and exciting club in just a couple of seasons.
