Who Is Chad Tracy? New Red Sox Interim Manager Touted To Take Over Permanent Role For Storied Franchise

The Boston Red Sox endured a terrible start to the 2026 campaign. They are languishing at the bottom of the American League East after the opening month of the season. The Red Sox front office responded with a shocking decision to fire manager Alex Cora this Saturday. Chad Tracy was promoted from his minor league role to become the interim manager of the team.

Prior to his new appointment, Chad Tracy was the manager of the Worcester Red Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. He was in his fifth year in the role, having taken over the team in 2021. Tracy was previously the minor league coordinator for the Los Angeles Angels. He also managed Low-A Burlington and High-A Inland Empire in the Angels organization.

As a player, Tracy was drafted in the third round by the Texas Rangers in 2006. But despite nine years in professional baseball, he never reached the MLB, making it as far as Triple-A before moving into coaching in 2015. His grandfather and brothers also played professionally, while his dad, Jim, managed the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Colorado Rockies.

Tracy left midway through the WooSox game against the Syracuse Mets, which his team went on to win. He now has 499 wins as a pro baseball coach. Therefore, his first win with the Red Sox, whenever it arrives, will be the 500th of his career.

Red Sox Infielder Opens Up on Chad Tracy Appointment

Boston Red Sox infielder Nick Sogard spoke with Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette regarding the promotion of Chad Tracy as the interim manager of the team. Sogard is starting the season with Triple-A Worcester, although he is part of Boston’s 40-man roster.

“I think everyone felt like it was something that would absolutely happen at some point,” Sogard said. “Obviously, crazy circumstances. He addressed us. It was super professional as always, (he) acknowledged that he is like bummed that a lot of his really close friends just lost their jobs, you know?”

“But, (I’m) super excited for him. He deserves it. He’s ready. He’s someone that I’ve grown really close with, obviously, over the years here, so I’m just really happy that he’s getting what we all feel like he deserves.”

Tracy joins the Red Sox on their ongoing road trip in Baltimore. He will take charge of his first game on Sunday against the Orioles at Camden Yards.
