As noted by the JoeBucsFan website, Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht was delighted that Miami edge-rusher Rueben Bain Jr. fell to the Buccaneers at the 15th overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft.
During a recent appearance on the FanDuel TV "Up & Adams" program, Buccaneers edge-rusher YaYa Diaby sent somewhat of a warning to the rest of the NFL regarding what Bain could accomplish during his rookie season.
"Just by the look in his eyes — he's hungry," Diaby said about Bain, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "And he got that mad, mad, mad look like he's ready to get after it. As you can see, from the walk that he had, he picked up the hat and just went right to the stage. So, you could tell how hungry he is, how ready he is. Honestly, the whole pass rush, the whole edge class, he was the best in my eyes. I'm just so happy to have him part of this team."
Arm-length concerns hovered over Bain's draft stock throughout the spring and possibly caused at least a couple of teams to pass on him before he fell into Tampa Bay's lap. Additionally, it's unclear if the fact that he was involved in a fatal vehicular crash when he was a sophomore in March 2024 impacted how any clubs viewed him this spring.
That said, Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked Bain as the ninth-best overall player in this year's draft class. Thus, the Buccaneers could feel that they landed one of the top value selections of the opening round of the 2026 player-selection process.
Diaby mentioned that he felt Bain was "p-----" that he remained on the board through the draft's first 14 picks.
"He will be a difference maker for us," Diaby added about Bain.
As of Friday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Bain listed second among the betting favorites at +550 odds to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award for the upcoming season. It sounds like Bain will enter September with a chip on at least one of his shoulders.
