Why Braves are facing ‘interesting’ roster decisions

The Atlanta Braves could soon face a crowded rotation as their pitching depth improves during the season’s final weeks.

AJ Smith-Shawver strengthened his case Tuesday night with 6 1/3 scoreless innings for Triple-A Gwinnett, allowing one hit while throwing 95 pitches.

His workload showed that he is no longer merely rebuilding stamina after surgery. Smith-Shawver underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2025 before returning to Atlanta on July 29 for his first start in 426 days.

The Braves optioned him to Gwinnett after that appearance. MLB rules generally require an optioned pitcher to remain in the minors for at least 15 days unless an applicable exception permits an earlier recall. Smith-Shawver becomes eligible Friday.

Reynaldo Lopez adds another layer to the rotation discussion. The Braves placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured list on August 2 with left knee inflammation, retroactive to July 30. An MRI revealed no structural damage, and the club initially expected him to miss minimal time.

As the Braves decide how to fit both pitchers onto their staff, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman addressed the developing situation Tuesday night in a post on X, formerly Twitter, after Smith-Shawver’s latest start for Gwinnett.

“AJ Smith-Shawver allowed 1 hit, recorded seven strikeouts and didn’t issue a walk over 6.1 scoreless innings (95 pitches) for Gwinnett tonight. His 15-day minimum stay in the Minors will expire Friday. Braves have some interesting decisions with Smith-Shawver available and Reynaldo Lopez nearing his return.”

Having both pitchers available would give the Braves valuable depth entering the stretch run. It would also require the club to evaluate its rotation, bullpen, and available roster spots before making corresponding moves. That flexibility could prove valuable as Atlanta manages workloads, protects veterans, and navigates the demands of a competitive postseason race.

Smith-Shawver’s recovery carries particular significance after the lengthy rehabilitation process. Returning less than 14 months after Tommy John surgery already represented progress. His latest performance demonstrated that he may be prepared to contribute again.

Atlanta’s challenge is no longer finding enough capable pitching. It is deciding how to create room for two returning arms without disrupting a staff competing for postseason positioning.
