Why Did The Detroit Tigers Fire Their Triple-A Manager Gabe Alvarez? A Deeper Look Into The Controversy

The Detroit Tigers started the 2026 campaign as one of the contenders for the American League pennant after reaching the playoffs the past two seasons. But they are facing some trouble on and off the field. Tarik Skubal is sidelined for at least a couple of months due to elbow surgery. Meanwhile, the Tigers fired their Triple-A manager, Gabe Alvarez, for alleged sexual harassment.

On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers issued a statement announcing their decision to part company with Gabe Alvarez. The Tigers stated they terminated the contract of the 52-year-old “due to a violation of club policy.” But did not mention any specifics. Alvarez revealed in a statement to ESPN on Wednesday that he sent an “inappropriate text message to a female colleague.

“I sent a single text message to a colleague that I intended as a lighthearted joke. Shortly after sending it, I recognized that the message was inappropriate and did not reflect the values and judgment I strive to uphold, and I immediately reached out to clarify my intent,” Gabe Alvarez stated.

“I never intended to cause discomfort or offense, and I regret that the message created this situation. This was an isolated incident and not reflective of my long-standing record of professionalism, respect for colleagues, and conduct over the course of my career.”

Alvarez joined the Detroit Tigers organization in 2022. He led the Double-A Erie to successive Eastern League titles in 2023 and 2024. He was promoted to Triple-A Toledo ahead of the 2025 season.

Gabe Alvarez Dismissal Is One Of Several Harassment Cases In Detroit Tigers Franchise

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that Gabe Alvarez is not the only case of misconduct within the Detroit Tigers. He stated some other incidents that occurred within the organization in the past couple of years.

“Sam Menzin, an assistant general manager with the team, resigned in April 2025 and was later reported to have sent lewd photos to multiple female Tigers employees. A later report alleged eight men employed by Ilitch Sports and Entertainment—the consortium that owns the Tigers and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings—were accused of misconduct toward women,” Passan wrote.

Passan stated Gabe Alvarez had a clean slate with the Detroit Tigers’ HR department until he sent the text message on Monday. Employees who violate Ilitch Sports’ harassment policies are reportedly subject to immediate termination of their contracts.
