Why Mariners surprisingly hired Jason Kanzler as manager

With the Seattle Mariners going through a disappointing season this past year, the team had been looking for its new manager after firing Dan Wilson, but the wait is finally over. As the Mariners hired Dan Wilson’s replacement in Jason Kanzler, top figures for the ball club would explain what made them go with a surprising pick.

Kanzler has not managed a baseball team at any level, more having experience in other roles such as a coach for the Houston Astros in 2022 and 2023, then going to the Chicago Cubs as director of player development. That was enough, along with the interview process, for Seattle to hire Kanzerl as the next skipper, as even former Houston Astros manager Joe Espada was a finalist.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto listed what made Kanzler stand out.

“Our goal in this process was finding a manager with the ability to challenge all of us to improve,” Dipoto said in a statement, via MLB.com. “Jason has the mindset, expertise, communication skills and intensity to help create a championship standard here in Seattle.”

Jason Kanzler is the “right person” to lead the Mariners

Kanzler expressed how “thrilled” he is to join the Mariners, and is excited to inherit a roster that had major expectations last year, with the opportunity to have immediate success.

“This team has an immense amount of talent in all facets of the game, and my coaching staff and I are excited to access and unlock this team’s full potential,” Kanzler said.

Seattle general manager Justin Hollander would also talk about the process of hiring Kanzler, saying that after the process, the team concluded that Kanzler is “the right person to lead our organization.”

“Throughout the process, Jason consistently demonstrated elite leadership skills, high-end content and an ability to connect and partner with players, staff and front office,” Hollander said. “We all believe Jason is the right person to lead our organization back to the postseason.”

At any rate, Kanzler is looking to help improve the Mariners after finishing with a 76-86 record this past season, finishing third in the AL West.
