Why this minor league team appears to have a bigger payroll than three MLB teams

The Texas Rangers pitching staff has been bitten pretty hard by the injury bug lately.

Starters Max Scherzer and Jacob de Grom have both been rehabbing with Texas' Double-A affiliate Frisco RoughRiders this week.

Besides the obvious star power, Scherzer and de Grom's presence on the roster — combined with top prospect Kumar Rocker — means Frisco currently has a higher payroll than MLB sides Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Oakland.

Scherzer is owed $12.5M and de Grom $40M this season, according to Spotrac. That's roughly 86 percent of the money being shelled out to players on Frisco's roster.

Now, of course, Texas is writing the checks for Scherzer and de Grom so technically Frisco isn't actually sporting the largest payroll in the minor leagues.

But if you're a fan of Frisco, now's the time to go see a game as de Grom is scheduled to make three more rehab starts before returning to Globe Life Field.

It's unclear how many starts Scherzer will make after his appearance on Friday.

Rocker, however, is getting his callup to triple-A Round Rock, potentially replacing former Vanderbilt teammate and 2021 second-overall pick Jack Leiter who could be heading up to Arlington for his big league debut according to reports.
