With the conclusion of the World Baseball Classic’s quarterfinals, the stage is set for the remaining four teams to compete. The first round of winner-take-all play is over, and the world will see some of the best baseball ever to be played in the history of the sport. A plethora of superstars remain, while one team has shocked the world and continues to pave a path for generations to come.

The Dominican Republic’s Juggernaut

The team from the Dominican Republic is not only winning but also dismantling teams without opposition. In the quarterfinals, the Dominicans put up ten runs against Korea, forcing a mercy rule walk-off to occur in the seventh inning. Spearheaded by the deepest and most potent lineup left in the tournament, the Dominican Republic is, undoubtedly, the favorite to win it all.

After going undefeated in pool play and dominating Korea 10-0 on Friday night, the Dominican Republic will host the United States in Miami. Luis Severino will start after his last outing in pool play, where he struck out five in four innings against the Netherlands.

The United States Find Ways to Get it Done

Throughout the entirety of the World Baseball Classic tournament, the United States has been succeeding without succeeding. The opportunities to tack on runs are always apparent, though the United States never seems to get the clutch hit when needed. After a nail-biting win over Canada, the United States plays for a chance at the finals.

Canada was not able to cash in on an opportunity in the seventh inning of the ball against the United States, in which Canada had runners on second and third with nobody out. David Bednar closed the door in the seventh, and Mason Miller struck out the side in the ninth to ensure a United States victory. Despite managing to make it to this stage of the tournament, the United States does not look like the team everyone expects it to be. Paul Skenes takes the mound in what will be must-see television against the stacked lineup of the Dominican Republic.

Italy Continues to Shock the World

At the beginning of the tournament, it was fair to say that Italy had a solid team. With a fair amount of major league talent and some young minor league prospects to round out the roster, Team Italy looked like it could begin something to improve on for future tournaments. What this team has been able to accomplish in the last week and a half has been nothing other than phenomenal.

Going undefeated in pool play, including a win over the United States in which they once led 8-0, Italy knocked off Puerto Rico on Saturday. Italy does not make defensive mistakes, and they play a very smart game offensively. Led by captain Vinnie Pasquantino, the Italians have been playing some of the cleanest baseball in the tournament. Team Italy will play Venezuela on Monday in what will be a very intriguing ballgame.

Venezuela Triumphs in a Game for the Ages

Venezuela against Samurai Japan will go down as one of baseball’s greatest games in the history of the sport. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Shohei Ohtani hit leadoff home runs to set the tone for an absolute thriller. Venezuela battled back from a 5-2 deficit while the partisan crowd provided one of the most electric environments the world has seen in some time. Wilyer Abreu crushed a go-ahead two-run home run that broke the tie in the seventh.

To beat Japan was no small task, as Japan is coming off a championship performance in 2023. The bullpen for Venezuela was lights out, and after starter Ranger Suarez faltered, the offense clawed its way back. The leadoff batters went a combined 6-8 with a walk to begin the innings. Venezuela has a legitimate chance at capturing the trophy this year, as the world saw just how combustible this offense truly is.

End of My WBC Final Four Rant

For the United States to win the entire tournament, the stars need to perform offensively. Bryce Harper and Cal Raleigh have been disappointing at the plate, and the team has looked sluggish overall. The Dominican Republic has looked dominant since the first game of pool play. They are firing on all cylinders in every metric of the game, and appear to be absolutely unstoppable.

Team Italy’s story is one that could change the way the country of Italy sees baseball. While the team is not made up of the best superstars the game has to offer, the team cohesion and collective vibe reverberate throughout the hearts of the players and onto the field. After dethroning the defending champions, the team from Venezuela is playing with serious swagger. With the crowd behind their backs and some of the best plate appearances of the World Baseball Classic, Venezuela could ride this momentum into a deep run this tournament.
