Would Mets Accept This Trade for Shohei Ohtani?
USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani will be the most sought-after free agent when the season ends, whether he’s traded or not.

The chances of Ohtani being dealt at the deadline are diminishing. The Angels have played their way back into both the American League West race and the AL Wild Card race. They’re more likely to be buyers than sellers at the trade deadline.

Angels GM Perry Minasian said as much earlier this week.

But that didn’t stop one MLB Network personality from putting together an Ohtani deal that you have to see to believe.

Bo Porter, who played three Major League seasons and was the manager of the Houston Astros in 2013-14, said that he believes there is a “taker out there that can help the Angels reset their organization and actually put them in position to re-sign Ohtani this offseason.”

That “taker” is the New York Mets. And, boy this trade is a doozy.

In Porter’s projected deal, the Mets not only get Ohtani — who is a pitcher and a designated hitter — but also gets Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, outfielder Hunter Renfroe and right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski.

All four players are on the Angels’ current roster.

So, what are the Mets giving up? Well …

The Mets would give up four current players — outfielder Starling Marte, third baseman Brett Baty, third baseman Eduardo Escobar and right-handed pitcher Tylor Megill.

But that’s not all, as a salesman might say. Take these four Major Leaguers right now and you’ll also get four of the Mets’ Top 6 prospects — center Kevin Parada, shortstop Ronny Mauricio, right-handed pitcher Blake Tidwell and right-handed pitcher Dominic Hamel.

If you think this is fiction, here’s the tweet.

And here’s the video of Porter explaining all of this.

“The Mets are going to be all in,” Porter said. “They have (Max) Scherzer, they have (Justin) Verlander so they’re going to go for it.”

The logic for the Mets taking the other three players? The Angels want someone to take Rendon’s contract — he’s midway through a seven-year, $245 million deal — and Renfroe would give the Mets some offense. Renfroe is batting below .250 with 12 home runs.

The logic for the Angels accepting the deal? The raft of near-Major League ready prospects and taking Marte’s deal off the Mets’ books.

So, if you’re scoring at home, the Angels get eight players, including four prospects, and more than $100 million in salary relief. The Mets get Ohtani for two months, Rendon’s massive contract and a couple of solid players.

Why in the world would the Mets do this, in Porter’s estimation?

“You have to find someone who is all in on this season and that’s the New York Mets,” Porter said.

But are the Mets THAT all in?
