Yandy Diaz Update Surfaces Minutes After Leaving Yankees Game

The Tampa Bay Rays have struggled as of late, losing eight of their last ten games—a skid that has led to the front office’s decision to not invest in the current roster despite earlier rumors the organization might buy at the trade deadline.

A huge reason for their success prior to this downturn had been longtime corner infielder Yandy Diaz, whose consistent production in the middle of the order since his arrival in 2019 provided stability and power when the lineup needed it most.

The 33-year-old right-handed slugger has spent the last seven seasons of his major-league career in Tampa Bay. His best year came in 2023, when he made his first All-Star appearance, won his first Silver Slugger Award and captured the American League Batting Title after hitting .330 over 137 games.

During Thursday’s matchup with the division rival New York Yankees, Diaz was struck by a pitch in the first inning and later pinch-hit for by teammate Christopher Morel in the fourth inning after trying to remain in the game.

Moments later, it was confirmed Diaz was removed with a right forearm contusion and not for any trade-related reasons.

"Yandy Diaz left today’s game with a right forearm contusion. He’s day to day."

Diaz had surfaced as a potential target for multiple playoff contenders after the Rays decided to pivot toward selling off key pieces, yet early Thursday morning President of Baseball Operations Erik Neander announced the sell-off would not include Diaz or fellow All-Star Brandon Lowe.

Over 103 games this season, Diaz has compiled a .283 batting average, .809 OPS, 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. Tampa Bay will be hoping he recovers quickly, as losing him for an extended stretch would leave a massive hole in the middle of the lineup.
