The Yankees made seven roster moves on Sunday, reassigning several players to Triple-A and minor league camp. After the loss to the Tigers, they announced three more moves, including one of their promising young players who could be in line to take over at first base long-term.
Yankees’ Prospects on the Move: Ben Rice and Josh Breaux
Ben Rice:
Ben Rice has been working primarily at first base over the last few months with the hope he can replace Anthony Rizzo in the future.
The Yankees have a team option for Rizzo next year at $17 million, but Rice would be a far cheaper alternative if he can continue developing his offensive side. The 25-year-old showed some decent upside in spring training, playing six games and hitting .250 with a .455 on-base percentage. His 118 wRC+ indicated he was 18% better than the average hitter, recording three runs and two RBIs with a 27.3% strikeout and walk rate.
Rice won the team’s Development Hitter of the Year award last season, and he will continue his growth in Triple-A for one more season before a potential promotion. The Yankees love Rice’s makeup and the tools he brings offensively, but they simply don’t have a roster spot for him at the moment.
Josh Breaux:
The Yankees also sent Josh Breaux back down to Triple-A. At 26 years old, the catcher hit .667 with a .667 OBP over just three plate appearances this spring. He spent 25 games in Double-A and 12 games in Triple-A last year, showing decent offensive upside.
Unfortunately, the Yankees are stacked with catching talent, and Breaux has a tall task ahead of him even cracking the roster. The more likely scenario is that the Yankees offload him via trade at some point in the future.
Further Adjustments: Joey Gerber and Jordan Groshans
Joey Gerber:
The Yankees also sent 26-year-old pitcher Joey Gerber to Triple-A. Gerber spent the last year rehabilitating from injury after only tossing one inning with Seattle’s complex team in 2022. He threw one inning for the Yankees this spring over two games, allowing five earned runs in total. The Yankees will allow him to continue his development in the minors, but it doesn’t look great for his long-term prospects.
In addition to those three players, the Yankees also outrighted Jordan Groshans off the major league roster to Triple-A Scranton. Groshans cleared waivers and will hope to latch on and provide some value after once being considered a top prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays’ system.

New suitor emerges for Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez
The Arizona Diamondbacks have plenty of suitors for third baseman Eugenio Suarez. A new team has reportedly entered the market for his services. Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Phillies have reached out regarding Suarez. While Lauber did not provide any indication as to whether or not those talks have gained traction, the Phillies are an intriguing suitor for the Diamondbacks' third baseman. The Phillies' interest may be a recent development. Jon Heyman of the New York Post speculated on Friday that the Phillies could emerge as a suitor in the wake of third baseman Alec Bohm landing on the injured list with a fractured left rib. Suarez is in the midst of what is arguably his best season thus far. He has produced a .249/.321/.587 batting line in 421 plate appearances entering Saturday with 36 homers and a major league-leading 87 RBI. Suarez would be more than just another powerful bat in the lineup. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Bryce Harper are both left-handed hitters — adding Suarez would provide more balance in the batting order. He would also provide a counter against opposing managers bringing in a lefty reliever to face Schwarber and Harper. The biggest question would be how the Phillies would handle an eventual logjam on the roster. Bohm is expected to return from the IL in mid-August and would not have a clear path to regular at-bats if Suarez were acquired. Schwarber could theoretically return to left field to open up playing time at the DH spot, but his outfield defense is mediocre at best. However, as the Phillies are also looking to upgrade the outfield, where Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh have been disappointments, adding Suarez could solve several problems in one fell swoop.

Sunday marked the last day of Week 1 of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. The next time the team takes the field, it will be with pads, on Tuesday. Before we get there, however, let's take a look at everything of note from day four of Steelers training camp practice in Latrobe... Mike Tomlin said both Jones and WR Montana Lemonious-Craig have soft tissue injuries, while DJ Thomas-Jones seems to have one that is a little more severe. Similar to what happened with Zach Frazier yesterday, the Steelers are proving they have no time for growing pains after pulling Troy Fautanu on Sunday. Fautanu and Frazier may only be second-year players, but the team needs them to perform like seasoned professionals. It's been interesting to see the alignment of the WRs in Pittsburgh through the first four days of practice, as Roman Wilson has dominated the outside role compared to Calvin Austin, who is playing the slot. After making some nice plays in practice yesterday, Will Howard took some first-team reps in the team's 7on7 period on Sunday. The arrow contimues to point up for the sixth rounder. The same proved true on Sunday as the team won 7 Shots yet again. We'll see if that changes when the pads come on next week. While the real fights will probably start in the dog days of camp, the Steelers had their first big scrum in Latrobe on Sunday, and it featured Cole Holcomb and center Ryan McCollum. Continuing the trend of rookies making an impact, Yahya Black helped set that tone on Sunday with multiple pass breakups at the line of scrimmage against Mason Rudolph. Tough to ask for a better start to camp than what the Steelers' rookies put forth.
Two Rivals Emerge as Trade Suitors for Penguins' Erik Karlsson: Report
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been a team that opposing sides have been watching all offseason long. Pittsburgh has a few veteran players who could be on the move via trade, and it could see the front office be very active. With the Penguins in full rebuild mode, the team seems to be looking ahead to the future. One player that has been discussed in different deals is veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson. Karlsson still has two years remaining on his current contract, including this upcoming season. The veteran is owed $11.5 million in each year, so any team that would trade for him would need to take on his high salary. According to NHL insider Shayna Goldman, the options for the Penguins in any potential Karlsson trade have started to dwindle. But the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators were mentioned as potential options to land the star defender. Last season with the Penguins, Karlsson scored 11 goals and 42 assists over 82 games. Karlsson showed impressive production for Pittsburgh, and he could be a valuable asset to any team that would trade for him. At this point in his career, Karlsson likely wants to play for a contending team. Both the Hurricanes and Senators could provide him with this, with both sides making the playoffs last season. Pittsburgh could likely net some strong future assets in any Karlsson deal, giving them more of a path forward. Trading for a player like Karlsson could be risky due to his age, but this could also be a move to help push a team over the hump in the quest to win a Stanley Cup title.
Two Vancouver Canucks Prospects Invited To Prestigious Summer Hockey Tournament
The Vancouver Canucks have an interesting prospect group, and now Braeden Cootes and Wilson Bjorck are invited to a top NHL Summer Showcase. Braeden Cootes was a top pick of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2025 NHL Draft, and quickly he's become a fan favourite, with the team inking him to a three-year Entry Level Deal shortly after being drafted. Now, he's catching attention around the league, as he, along with Wilson Bjorck, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft have now been invited to the NHL's World Juniors Summer Showcase. Cootes, a native of Alberta will continue to make his case for a spot on the Team Canada 2025 World Juniors squad, while Bjorck is firming as an intriguing piece for what could be a highly competitive Swedish squad at the tournament. Last season, Cootes had 63 points in 60 games played for the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds, and given the two-way game that he brings to the ice, he could be a very valuable piece for Canada at the tournament, with the Canucks already valuing him highly as a potential middle-six centre of the future. As for Bjorck, he went highly underrated in the draft process this year, and after putting up 67 points in 43 games for Djurgardens Jr. last season, if he can continue to develop physically, he is certainly a piece for the Canucks fans to watch moving forward. Ultimately, this just goes to show what a promising prospect group the Canucks have been building in recent years, and if the duo of Cootes and Bjorck among others from this draft class pan out, the future remains very bright in Vancouver.
