Will the Boston Red Sox buy at the trade deadline? That seems to be the question around Major League Baseball, as they have multiple players they could trade if they don't.
If the Red Sox are in a position to compete for a playoff spot, there's reason to believe they might be interested in adding.
Recently looking at the top 25 players around Major League Baseball who could be dealt, CBS Sports linked them to the player they ranked No. 1. That player was none other than Ryan McMahon of the Colorado Rockies.
“I would like to see what McMahon's game looks like when he's spending the season in more normal hitting environments. Will I get that wish? Again, who knows. McMahon is on the wrong side of 30 and has just two more seasons remaining on his contract, suggesting the Rockies would be wise to act now, lest they miss out on their window to get a quality return. Potential landing spots: Red Sox, Yankees, Mets,” they wrote.
As CBS Sports outlined, the New York Mets and New York Yankees could be interested in his services, too.
McMahon, perhaps a bit overrated, would be a decent addition for the Red Sox.
However, to suggest that he'd be the perfect option would be wrong, as he’s yet to post an OPS+ above 98 throughout his career. That's with him playing at Coors Field, too.
He's hit 20 home runs in nearly every season since 2019, outside of the COVID campaign, but even then, it isn't like his numbers jump off the page.
McMahon is a decent, average player, nothing more.
