Yankees Announce Anthony Volpe's Return After Injury Scare

Anthony Volpe is back in the Yankees' lineup Monday night against the Padres, just two days after a shoulder scare that had the team holding its breath.

The shortstop exited Saturday’s game against the Rays after diving for a grounder and feeling a “pop” in his left shoulder. Although he stayed in the game, the incident raised concerns about a potential serious injury.

Initial X-rays and an MRI revealed no significant damage, only some "older stuff," according to manager Aaron Boone. Volpe sat out Sunday's game as a precaution, describing his shoulder as "sore" and "cranky." He took dry swings in the training room and was available in an emergency capacity. Boone indicated that Volpe's return to the lineup on Monday was "realistic," and Volpe himself was optimistic about playing.(New York Post)

Volpe, who turned 24 last week, has been a durable presence for the Yankees, starting all 33 games this season before Sunday's absence. In his third MLB season, he's batting .233 with five home runs, 19 RBIs, and four stolen bases.

His return comes at a crucial time for the Yankees, who are already dealing with injuries to key infielders Jazz Chisholm Jr.  and DJ LeMahieu.

Without Volpe on Sunday, the Yankees had to start Oswald Peraza at shortstop. Rookie Jorbit Vivas is expected to get the bulk of the playing time at second while Chisholm and LeMahieu are out.

With Volpe back at shortstop, the Yankees aim to stabilize their infield defense and spark their offense as they begin a three-game series against San Diego.
