The New York Yankees have determined the severity of All-Star pitcher Max Fried's elbow injury.
Fried had to leave Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles after just 61 pitches due to left elbow soreness. Although fans started panicking about the World Series champion's health, he told reporters that it wasn't a "long-term thing."
During this Friday's episode of "Evan & Tiki" on WFAN, former NFL running back Tiki Barber reported that Fried won't need Tommy John surgery. While fans were happy to hear that news, they were still anxiously waiting for an official update from the Yankees.
Well, the Yankees just announced that Fried has a bone bruise in his left elbow. He'll be placed on the 15-day injured list.
"LHP Max Fried underwent an MRI and CT scan on Thursday that was followed up by an examination with Yankees Team Physician, Dr. Chris Ahmad. He will be placed on the 15-day IL after initial findings revealed a left elbow bone bruise. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will also review Thursday’s imaging," the team said. "Repeat imaging will again be taken in a few weeks (or when asymptomatic) to further determine when Fried can resume throwing. A more specific return and rehab schedule will be determined at that time."
This has to be the best-case scenario for the Yankees and Fried. Sure he'll miss time this season, but at least he could return at a later date.
With Fried now out for at least the next two weeks, the Yankees will need Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers to continue their strong starts to the 2026 season.
The good news for the Yankees is that Carlos Rodon is back. The three-time All-Star was very productive in the Bronx last season, owning an 18-9 record and 3.09 ERA.
The Yankees are also expected to get Gerrit Cole back this summer. He's still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
