Yankees Announce Giancarlo Stanton News After Leaving Astros Game

Giancarlo Stanton is off to a slow start to the 2026 MLB season with the New York Yankees. Through his first 23 games, the 36-year-old right-handed slugger has posted a .253 batting average, .301 on-base percentage, .726 OPS, three home runs and 13 RBIs.

While he has not been a liability, Stanton no longer plays the field and is strictly a designated hitter, which makes his early production somewhat disappointing.

Still, the Yankees offense has had enough depth to withstand his drop-off. Entering Friday’s series opener against the Houston Astros, New York held a 16-9 record and sat alone atop the American League East.

Unfortunately, Stanton was unable to finish the contest. He started at DH and hit fifth in the lineup, collecting one hit in his first three at-bats, including an RBI single. But shortly after reaching base in the top of the sixth inning, he appeared uncomfortable and exited the game following a brief discussion with trainers.

Randal Grichuk pinch-ran for him, immediately raising concern given the lack of an obvious reason for Stanton’s early departure. Moments later, the Yankees announced an update. "Giancarlo Stanton left the game with 'right lower leg tightness,' per Yankees," reported Erik Boland of the New York Post.

If Stanton is forced to miss extended time, the Yankees do have options to fill the DH role, but the larger concern is yet another lower-body injury setback.

In 2025, he played only 77 games due to various injuries, an unfortunate theme throughout much of his tenure in the Bronx.

Still, when healthy, Stanton remains one of the best power hitters of his generation. Across 17 seasons, he has earned an MVP award, five All-Star selections, two Silver Sluggers and is closing in on 500 career home runs.

And now, with another issue surfacing, the Yankees can only hope this latest setback does not become the kind of prolonged absence that has defined too many of Stanton’s recent seasons.
