The New York Yankees are coming off a 7–1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels , where little went right despite 10 strikeouts from starting pitcher Ryan Weathers. They’ll aim to bounce back in the second game of the series. Ahead of the matchup, the Yankees announced a roster move on their X account, recalling right-hander Angel Chivilli from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Chivilli was acquired from the Colorado Rockies in a trade announced Jan. 28, 2026, just before spring training. After struggling to find a role in Colorado, he has thrived in the Yankees’ system, delivering strong performances at the Triple-A level and earning this opportunity to contribute at the major league level.

This is a strong move for the Yankees, who could benefit from an arm like Chivilli’s as he continues adjusting at the Triple-A level. He brings a fastball that sits around 97 mph, giving the bullpen a needed boost in velocity. His numbers with the Rockies last season were underwhelming, posting a 7.06 ERA and 1.688 WHIP with 43 strikeouts over 58.2 innings in 43 appearances.
However, his performance in the Yankees’ minor league system has been far more encouraging. Across five games, he has thrown 8.1 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and a 0.48 WHIP.
Chivilli’s arsenal stands out, featuring a sharp slider that generates swings and misses, and a developing changeup with splitter-like action. He has also shown strong strikeout ability, effective pitch tunneling, and the potential to grow into a reliable high-leverage reliever.
Chivilli is working to develop into a premier pitcher at the major league level. The right-hander signed with the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent on July 30, 2018, for a $200,000 bonus, and made his professional debut in 2019 in the Dominican Summer League.
After the canceled 2020 season, he steadily climbed the Rockies’ system, appearing in the Arizona Complex League, Single-A Fresno, High-A Spokane, and Double-A Hartford. He made his MLB debut on June 3, 2024, at age 21, after being added to Colorado’s 40-man roster on Nov. 14, 2023, to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.
The Yankees acquired him in January 2026, giving him a fresh opportunity. Under a one-year, pre-arbitration deal worth $762,000, Chivilli now has a chance to translate his strong minor league performance into a meaningful role at the major league level.
