The injury-riddled New York Yankees got much-needed good news on two of their sidelined superstars.

Before their game on Monday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the media that left-handed starter Max Fried (left elbow bone bruise), who has been on the injured list since May 16, will throw a live batting practice session on Tuesday. Among those facing him will be designated hitterGiancarlo Stanton (right calf strain), who was placed on the IL on April 28.

Fried is expected to throw two simulated innings tomorrow, equating to roughly 30 pitches. As for Stanton, he has also resumed a running program after facing a setback in his rehab two weeks ago.

The Yankees have missed both players dearly this season. Fried got off to an excellent start to the season before his injury, tossing 61.2 innings with a 3.21 ERA and 2.71 FIP over 10 starts while allowing just one home run. Stanton, who hit three home runs in 96 plate appearances to begin the year, is a consistent power threat who lengthens New York's lineup with his presence alone.

Not having Stanton in particular is catching up to the Yankees, as they proceeded to lose team captain Aaron Judge to a stress fracture in his right rib; he will likely be out until August. Center fielder Trent Grisham also landed on the IL on June 13 with a right hamstring strain. With so many key hitters out, the Yankees could only muster 23 runs over their last nine games, in which they went 2-7 to fall out of first place in the AL East.

The Yankees did get another positive update on Grisham, though. He is expected to play in a rehab game tomorrow and may be activated from the IL on either Wednesday or Friday. While Stanton and Fried are a much longer ways to go compared to Grisham (there is no timetable yet for Stanton), the Bronx Bombers appear to be on track for a largely healthy roster by the stretch run.

For now, New York needs to continue treading water. They will try to get back to their winning ways as they begin a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers tonight in Yankee Stadium.
