Yankees' Anthony Volpe should be under microscope after gaffe vs. Angels

After making a costly error in Wednesday night's home game against the Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe's recent struggles should receive more spotlight.

With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning, Angels center fielder Jo Adell chopped a ground ball to Volpe, who bobbled it before missing a throw at second base. Angels right fielder Mike Trout scored off Volpe's throwing error.

Volpe had an opportunity to redeem himself in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he squandered it. He struck out swinging, sealing a 3-2 win for the Angels.

The Yankees (42-31) have now lost six straight games, three of which have come against L.A. During this stretch, the Angels have outscored the Yankees 8-2. They'll play again on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET.

After a hot start, the Yankees have recently cooled, posting a 13-12 record over their past 25 games.

Attribute some of this to Volpe's recent slide. Through his first 51 at-bats in June, he had a below-average .235 batting average. On Wednesday night against the Angels, he went 0-for-4 at the plate.

"I got to take a look at it, I mean I know I can do better," Volpe said postgame, via Colin Martin of SNY-TV in New York. "Everyone holds themselves to really high standards and we know we're not getting the job done. We're going to keep, like I said, working and holding each other to that. And I'm going to hold myself to that. You know, just not performing and not doing those types of things. You can control a swing decision, so you gotta be better."

The Yankees need Volpe to get it together, or his cold spell could keep becoming a bigger problem for the slumping club.
