The New York Yankees want to shore up their backstop position ahead of the trade deadline.
The Yankees would like to acquire Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman via trade, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported on Sunday. Nightengale also notes that the Yankees are eyeing Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers as well.
Goodman, 26, is one of baseball’s most underrated power hitters. He has made two All-Star teams with the Rockies now and won a Silver Slugger Award in 2025 after hitting 31 home runs and 91 RBIs.
This season, Goodman has been performing even more impressively. Through just the first half thus far, the righty-batting Goodman has 27 home runs and 57 RBIs on a career-high .862 OPS.
Still, Nightengale adds that the Rockies, who are an NL-worst 39-59, are planning to keep Goodman at this point. That makes sense too given that Goodman remains under club control through 2028.
Nevertheless, the Yankees, sitting second in the AL East at 54-42, will see what they can do to improve their underwhelming catcher rotation of Austin Wells and Ali Sanchez. Particularly with New York recently getting rebuffed by one other All-Star trade target, they might be willing to make Colorado an offer that they can’t refuse for Goodman.
