The New York Yankees had to work hard to get the job done on Thursday night. The team made a historic comeback and won 6-5 with Aaron Judge‘s game-ending sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning against the Seattle Mariners.
The Bronx Bombers entered this game with 2 wins and were looking to complete the sweep of the Mariners. They had to navigate through a tough part though as they were no-hit through the 8th inning against Bryan Woo.
The Mariners pitcher opened the game with two walks, but then took control of the game. He would not allow a single base runner until Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke the no-hitter bid to start the 8th inning. After Anthony Volpe opened the scoring for his team through a sacrifice fly, Woo was taken out of the game.
Giancarlo Stanton would then hit a 2-run pinch-hit home run to make it a 5-3 game. After loading up the bases in the bottom of the 9th inning and with two outs, Austin Wells drove in 2 runs through a single against Andres Munoz and tied the game at 5-5.
After loading up the bases again in the 10th inning, Aaron Judge stepped up to the plate. The Yankees’ captain, who was 0-for-4 in the game, would hit a fly ball to center field. While he got caught out, Volpe would take off from third base and run home. The shortstop would make a perfect slide at home plate and avoid the tag from Cal Raleigh to win the game for the Yankees.

The AL East thus accomplished something that had not been done in over 48 years. They became the first team since the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1977 to win a game by trailing by 5 or more runs and being no-hit till the 8th inning. The Pirates did this against the Montreal Expos and also won 6-5 in June 1977.

They're the first team to win a game after losing by 5+ runs with no hits in the 8th since June 24, 1977 (Pirates vs. Expos). https://t.co/EXbzc4Qb4B
The Yankees also completed the sweep of the Mariners in the process and improved their record to 52-41. Following a 6-game losing run, this was their 4th successive win, a much-needed improvement for the reigning American League Champions.
The New York Yankees were down and out for most of the game on Thursday. The Bronx Bombers sparked a late comeback and tied the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. Following their loss, Seattle Mariners star Cal Raleigh admitted that the Yankees caught their pitcher tipping the pitches to him.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, pitcher Andres Munoz was seen in a video getting caught by the Yankees about his pitches. In one video, Cody Bellinger could be seen signaling his teammates about a slider from the pitcher.
He was tipping it every time. Obviously, they weren’t making it very discreet. It’s part of the game. It’s our job. We should have known about that going into the series. They made it really hard there at the end.
Cal Raleigh said Andres Munõz was tipping his slider in the 9th. He saw the Yankees clearly pick up on it.

However, Munoz’s manager, Dan Wilson , disputed this claim and expressed that he did not give anything away. Munoz would concede two runs in this inning and saw the Yankees complete the comeback against his team. Meanwhile, Raleigh, the MLB home run leader, went 0-for-4 in this game and missed the crucial tag of Anthony Volpe at the end of the game.
