The New York Yankees have had a busy MLB offseason, headlined by the re-signing of star outfielder Cody Bellinger in free agency. New York also brought back Paul Blackburn, Amed Rosario and Ryan Yarbrough, all players who ended last season with the team before entering free agency this winter.

While much of the focus has understandably been on New York's free agency movement, the team has also been active on the waiver wire. Per Spotrac , the Yankees have made six waiver claims this offseason. The latest came on Thursday when New York claimed relief pitcher Osvaldo Bido off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.

In a corresponding move to make room for Bido, the Yankees designated shortstop Brendan Shewmake for assignment. Now 28 years old, Shewmake was a first-round pick of the Atlanta Braves in 2019. He did not make his MLB debut until 2023, and has just 68 at-bats at the big league level.

Shewmake's Minor League numbers also underwhelm, as the left-handed hitting infielder owns a .703 OPS across six seasons. The elite contact that made him a standout at Texas A&M has not translated to the professional level. New York made the decision to cut Shewmake official on Thursday.

"Earlier today, the Yankees claimed RHP Osvaldo Bido off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels," the team announced. "To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated INF Braden Shewmake for assignment."

Shewmake will now be exposed to waivers where the 29 other MLB teams will have the option to claim him. If he goes unclaimed, New York can outright him to the minors where he'd no longer occupy a 40-man roster spot.

As for who the Yankees are adding with this transaction, Bido is a struggling 30-year-old right-hander with no real success at the MLB level. In 59 appearances across three seasons, he owns a 5.07 ERA. None of his underlying metrics grade above average, per Baseball Savant, and his 71 ERA+ last season was a major step back from 2024 when he showed signs of potential.

While waiver claims in February often prove inconsequential in the grander scheme of an MLB team's outlook, this is the second in as many days for New York. The team also added Yanquiel Fernández off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, a 23-year-old outfielder with above-average bat speed and a career .813 OPS in the minors.
