Yankees Demote Struggling Outfielder Following Rockies Game

The New York Yankees optioned Jasson Domínguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Thursday’s 10-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.

The move came just five days after Domínguez was recalled to the majors. His latest stint ended after four games, with the 23-year-old going 1-for-9 at the plate.

Domínguez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Thursday, but his biggest issue came in the eighth inning when he committed a costly defensive error in right field. The misplay allowed Zac Veen to score from first base on an Adael Amador single.

The Yankees announced the option early Friday morning. Domínguez also drew a walk, scored a run and stole a base in Thursday’s win, but the defensive mistake added to a difficult return to the majors.

Domínguez has struggled to find consistency at the plate throughout the season. He is hitting .225 with a .267 on-base percentage, a .368 slugging percentage, six home runs and 14 RBIs in 57 MLB games.

His production in Triple-A has been considerably better. Domínguez has hit .283/.361/.420 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs across 54 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

The Yankees are now sending him back to the minors as they continue navigating a tight American League East race. New York entered Friday 84-62, three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the division.

Domínguez’s demotion gives him another opportunity to get regular at-bats and work on his consistency. For the Yankees, the decision reflects the importance of dependable production and defense as the postseason approaches.
