The hits just keep coming for the Yankees, who revealed Marcus Stroman experienced a setback on Friday in his recovery from a left knee injury that has bothered him for about a month.
Stroman threw a bullpen session in Tampa, and still felt discomfort in the knee, according to Aaron Boone.
Reigning Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is expected to start a throwing program on Wednesday, Boone said, and is still looking at a June return.
Before Gil returns, the Yankees clearly need a change, as Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough don't make for a competitive back-end to the rotation, though Warren is coming off of 7 1/3 sharp innings Friday against the Athletics.
Stroman has pitched to a 11.57 ERA in three starts this season, including a disastrous final start against the San Francisco Giants where he only lasted 0.2 innings.
Plenty of pitchers seemed likely to move, and MLB.com's Mark Feinsand polled executives on the most likely players to be on the move during July's trade deadline. The most, with 12 votes, was former Cy Young Sandy Alcantara.
Alcantara's price right now has never been lower, as despite his Cy Young pedigree, he's coming off of Tommy John surgery and has pitched to a 8.42 ERA in seven starts, with only one of those starts being quality starts. Four of his seven starts have been against teams that currently sit .500.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman could easily use Alcantara's rough start to wrest the former Cy Young from Miami for a potentially lower price than in July.
It's not like the Marlins are strangers to early trades, either: they traded Luis Arraez to the Padres roughly a year ago, in May 2024.
The Marlins are also big fans of the Yankees' farm system; catcher Agustin Ramirez, who was acquired in the Jazz Chisholm Jr trade with New York last year, has been one of the Marlins' best hitters since making his debut a few weeks ago.
If the Yankees want to quickly patch up their rotation problems, they should give Miami a call.
