The New York Yankees have been so vague about Luis Gils’ rehab from a lat strain, it was shocking Sunday morning when GM Brian Cashman gave a definitive answer.

Speaking on MLB Network Radio’s "Front Office Show" Sunday morning, Yankees GM Brian Cashman provided a series of injury updates. When asked specifically if we would see Gil pitch at some point this year, Cashman didn’t hesitate.

“Yes,” Cashman said.

And then he gave the vague timeline of “Mid-summer.”

Cashman did give a glimpse into the timeline, however. He said Gil was in his throwing program, but then slipped in that he is still throwing “on flat ground.”

That is the earliest stage of a pitcher's throwing progression. From here, the steps include throwing off a mound, bullpen sessions, live batting practice, simulated games, and then rehab outings before a big-league return.

Gil suffered a lat strain late in spring training and was shut down in March. It was one of two major hits the Yankees’ rotation took this spring. Gerrit Cole was lost for the season after needing Tommy John surgery.

After missing nearly two full seasons due to Tommy John surgery, Gil returned to post a 15–7 record with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts over 151.2 innings in 29 starts last season He set a Yankees rookie record with 14 strikeouts in a single game on May 18 against the Chicago White Sox and was named AL Pitcher of the Month for May, going 6–0 with a 0.70 ERA during that span. Gil allowed three or fewer runs in 22 of his 29 starts and held opponents to a .189 batting average, ranking second in MLB among pitchers with at least 150 innings.

He became the first Yankee to win the Rookie of the Year award since Aaron Judge in 2017.
