Oswaldo Cabrera remains a key figure in the Yankees’ plans, even as he battles through recovery from a severe ankle injury. Speaking to reporters Thursday at Yankee Stadium, manager Aaron Boone offered a cautiously optimistic update on Cabrera’s rehab progress.

“I think there’s a small possibility and what do I know,” Boone said. “I don’t think we’re necessarily expecting it, but you never know how we heal and how the next couple of months [will go]. I know one thing with Oswaldo is that there’s not a better person out there who loves all this as much as him, and I know he’s going to pour everything into the rehab process and healing, and we’ll see where we are as it unfolds.”

Cabrera suffered the injury on May 12 while scoring from third base on a sacrifice fly in Seattle. The impact was severe enough that he was carted off the field and taken to a local hospital. He was placed on the injured list the following day and underwent surgery a few days later.

The procedure was more complicated than initially expected due to ligament damage in the ankle, That will likely extend Cabrera’s recovery timeline.

Still, Boone’s remarks highlight the Yankees’ faith in Cabrera’s work ethic and passion for the game. And maybe suggesting that the team is hopeful he can make a meaningful comeback despite the setback is just to keep Cabrera's hopes up.

Cabrera is an eternally optimistic kid. He is always smiling in the clubhouse and saying hello to teammates and stadium workers alike. If he wants to believe he will play baseball again this season, the Yankees are not going to stop him.

And maybe the power of positive thinking will surprise everybody.
