Yankees Infielder Ryan McMahon Calls Out His Own Play After Rough Stretch

Ryan McMahon didn’t bother sugarcoating it.

After hitting his second home run with the Yankees, but more importantly, his first in the Bronx on Wednesday, the veteran infielder was asked what the moment meant. His answer was as straightforward as it gets.

“Oh, man, finally,” McMahon said, per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. “I’ve sucked. I don’t think it’s a secret, so I’m just trying to get going.”

The numbers back him up. Since being acquired at the trade deadline, McMahon has posted just a .619 OPS in pinstripes, with an even rougher .514 OPS over his last 15 games entering Thursday. His three-run shot off the Nationals offered a flicker of what the Yankees hoped they were getting when they brought him over to stabilize third base and add some left-handed balance.

The home run came at the right time, in a game where the Yankees’ offense piled on again, but McMahon was more focused on his personal reset. The 29-year-old has seen enough of his own at-bats to know the results haven’t been good enough.

Aaron Boone has continued to back him, pointing to McMahon’s defense and the hope that his track record at the plate eventually surfaces. But with the Yankees fighting for playoff positioning, production is what will matter most.

For now, McMahon is hoping Thursday is the start of something better. His honesty about the struggles won’t change the stat line — but it gives a clear picture of where his head is.

“I’m just trying to get going,” he said. The Yankees could use it.
