The New York Yankees are off to a great start as they hold the second-best record in the league at the beginning of May. The Bronx Bombers are leading the AL East, but are not too far ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays. All this, without the help of several key players.
Injuries have played a big part in the team’s lineup this 2026 season. Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt are all out. Luis Gil’s poor performance put him in the minors. Anthony Volpe failed to get a promotion after recovering from his injury.
To make things worse, Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the IL. Despite several players yet to get back, the Yankees are doing a fantastic job. Most players are expected to return soon. Here’s the latest update on their injuries.
Stanton was placed on the 10-day IL after suffering a low-grade right calf strain. While it seemed to be a minor injury, it turns out that Stanton is still not ready to get back on the field.
Aaron Boone shares that Giancarlo Stanton hasn't started any sort of run program yet:

Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Stanton is still feeling the effects of the strain. The Yanks are doing fine without Stanton, but his return would certainly boost the lineup.
Cole is coming off Tommy John surgery. The team expected the pitcher to return in May. While he has shown signs of progress, Gerrit Cole is still struggling in the minors. The Yankees ace surrendered six runs and seven hits in four-plus innings against Winston-Salem. Cole allowed solo homers to Caleb Bonemer and Kyle Lodis. It was Cole’s fourth minor league start.

Carlos Rodon showed signs of struggle as well after surrendering six home runs in six-plus innings. The southpaw gave up a two-run homer to Mickey Gasper. Rodon holds a 7.11 ERA in three of his Triple-A starts. Hopefully, both pitchers will turn things around for the Yankees. For now, they are nearing a return to the big leagues.
