The Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day Game is back this year, just not in the way many had hoped.
Bob Klapisch of NJ Advance Media was the first to report that the Yankees’ old-timers will be playing a softball game this year when they convene for their annual reunion at The Stadium.
While it will be nice to see the fan favorites of yesteryear in action once more, this new wrinkle has already been met with mixed reactions at best. The last time the old-timers played a baseball game was in 2019. The game was canceled due to COVID in 2020 and ‘21. Too many of the players were dealing with injuries and sickness in 2022 to play a game. In 2023 and ‘24, the game was replaced with an on-field Q&A that was met with near-universal disapproval.
So, compared to the disappointment of the last few years, a softball game is a step in the right direction.
However, it lacks the feeling of what the event was all about in the first place. Fans came out to Yankee Stadium to see their old favorites suit up one more time in a display of nostalgia. And every once in a while, the players responded with a memorable moment. Mickey Mantle homered off Whitey Ford and years later, David Cone gave up a dinger to Tino Martinez.
A softball game will likely result in far sloppier play as it's not so easy to transition from baseball to the underhanded, bigger ball sport. Again, the fans don’t care if their old heroes aren’t what they once were. But you still need to keep them entertained and a softball game isn’t likely to hold their attention.
Supposedly, Derek Jeter’s refusal to play a baseball game was behind the game’s cancellation the last two years and is why the organization is attempting to compromise with softball this summer. If true, Jeter is turning his back on the fans who showered him with adulation more so than any of his predecessors ever did.
For fans and old-timers alike, this annual event is as special a tradition as there is. It’s more than just a game, so please, don’t ruin it by changing the game.
