Before all the hype begins for the real New York Yankees rivalry weekend, Jazz Chisholm is nixing one storyline in the bud. With the Boston Red Sox coming into the Bronx this weekend, the Yankees' infielder shut down the comparisons between him and Rafael Devers.
When asked about Devers’ public frustration after Boston signed Alex Bregman and asked Devers to move from third base — even pushing him toward first — Chisholm to The Athletic is was not the same.
“His situation, it's completely different than mine,” Chisholm told The Athletic. “He was promised that position. That was promised to him. I believe if you’re promised your position, you should go play the position you were promised. That’s what he worked on his whole career. You can’t go back on it. I don’t have a problem with what he did.”
Chisholm’s own approach to position flexibility stands in sharp contrast. He admitted that he thought he was done with the third base experiment last season after the Yankees let Gleyber Torres walk as a free agent. Second base is clearly a spot he feels comfortable in, but the Yankees want to keep veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu there now.
Another difference in the situation is the personalities involved. It's been discussed ad nauseam that manager Alex Cora and GM Craig Breslow did not approach Devers the right way with the requests. Chisholm had nothing but praise for Aaron Boone through the whole process.
In a clubhouse filled with stars and big personalities, Chisholm’s experience and comments show how it works behind the scenes. Healthy relationships lead to a smooth and happy clubhouse.
