Yankees Linked to All-Star Arm in Early Trade Deadline Rumors

With the injury-plagued Milwaukee Brewers facing early-season struggles, speculation is mounting that they might become sellers at the trade deadline. ESPN's Buster Olney has suggested that the Brewers could be "opportunistic" in selling if they are not making a move in the loaded National League soon.

One name that stands out is All-Star pitcher Freddy Peralta, who could be a prime target for the pitching-needy New York Yankees.

Peralta has been a standout in the National League this season, posting a 2.18 ERA over his first eight starts. One of those came against the Yankees and that day former big-leaguer Cameron Maybin predicted the Yankees would try to land Peralta before July.

His durability is notable, having made over 30 starts in each of the past two seasons. At 28, he's in his prime and under team control through 2026, with an $8 million club option for that year. Spotrac projects his next contract to be around five years and $110 million, which is a bargain is you look at what the Yankees have recently spent on starting pitching.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are grappling with significant injuries in their rotation behind new ace Max Fried. Gerrit Cole is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil is sidelined until at least late June. Marcus Stroman, and his 11.57 ERA, is on the injured list with mysterious knee “stuff”. Carlos Rodón looks like he’s finally turning into the pitcher the Yankees thought they signed in 2023, but it is still a small sample size. Will Warren has one win and a 5.65 ERA in his first seven starts, showing flashes of talent and evidence that he should still be in the minors.

The Yankees designated Carlos Carrasco for assignment Tuesday, so they don’t have a fifth starter on the roster.

Peralta's performance and contract make him an attractive option

The Brewers have a history of trading pitchers before they reach free agency, like they did with Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader.

If they decide to move Peralta, the Yankees would likely need to part with top prospects. George Lombard, Jr. seems untouchable now that he is on the rise, but outfielder Spencer Jones (once he gets off the injured list) could be the name in a package that could help get it done.

The trade deadline may be over two months away, but the Yankees' rotation without Gerrit Cole can’t wait. GM Brian Cashman has to find quality pitching soon.
