Yankees Make Big-Time Roster Decision After Trade Deadline

The New York Yankees are elevating their top minor league prospect, shortstop George Lombard Jr., to the major league roster, YES Network reporter Jack Curry revealed late Monday.

Curry shared the development on the social platform X, writing: “George Lombard, Jr is being promoted to the Yankees. #yankees #lombard.”

The move comes in the aftermath of the team’s 13-7 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

Following that contest, the Yankees sent shortstop Anthony Volpe and outfielder Jasson Domínguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, along with right-handed pitcher Angel Chivilli.

The club confirmed the demotions in a post on X that stated: “Following tonight’s game, the Yankees optioned RHP Angel Chivilli, OF Jasson Domínguez and INF Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.”

Lombard, a shortstop, is expected to join recently acquired outfielder Heliot Ramos in filling the open roster spots created by the options of Volpe and Domínguez.

Ranked as the Yankees’ top prospect and the No. 20 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, the 21-year-old arrives with high expectations. The organization selected Lombard in the first round, 26th overall, of the 2021 MLB Draft from Gulliver Prep School in Miami.

His younger brother, shortstop Jacob Lombard, was taken by the Miami Marlins with the 14th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

According to his MLB Pipeline scouting evaluation, Lombard profiles as a player who generates more power than pure contact while providing reliable defense at shortstop.

Across 78 minor league contests this season, he has posted a .284 batting average, .411 on-base percentage and .498 slugging percentage, including 12 home runs, 24 doubles, 33 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. In 333 career minor league games, Lombard owns a .248 average, .372 on-base percentage and .391 slugging percentage with 26 home runs and 133 RBIs.

The promotion arrives amid a flurry of recent roster activity for the Yankees, who also obtained first baseman Luis García Jr. from the Washington Nationals prior to Monday’s trade deadline.

García delivered a go-ahead two-run home run in his Yankees debut during the loss to St. Louis.

Earlier, the club sent underperforming reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for prospects outfielder Luis Cruz and catcher Omar Alfonzo, while adding Ramos from the San Francisco Giants.

At 63-50, the Yankees currently hold the top American League wild-card position and sit 3½ games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East standings.
