The New York Yankees beat their archnemesis on Thursday, but it looks like it may have come at a price. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who leads the team with 26 stolen bases, left in the fourth inning against the Houston Astros after sustaining contusions on both knees.
The 27-year-old is also third on the Yankees with 28 homers, 54 walks and a 4.1 WAR, while being tied for third with 70 RBI. He has been one of the most efficient players on the squad, ranking ninth with 108 games played.
New York can't afford to lose Chisholm for an extended period as it tries to take the division lead from the Toronto Blue Jays down the stretch. However, the Yankees revealed good news about the two-time All-Star ahead of Friday's bout with the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium, via their social media.
Chisholm will start at second base and hit sixth. The 5-foot, 11-inch, 184-pounder will attempt to continue his momentum from the Houston series, when he went 4-for-11 with two homers, three RBIs and one stolen base across three games. The Yankees won two out of the three contests.
Chisholm's inclusion in the lineup follows his postgame comments on Thursday night revealing that the injuries weren't serious, via The New York Post's Greg Joyce.

The upcoming series between Toronto and New York will be the final one of the regular season between the two teams and thus could decide the division. The Yankees enter Friday three games behind, while the Blue Jays have already clinched the season series by winning seven out of the 10 previous games.
That means that New York is effectively four games back, as Toronto would get first place in the event of a tie. Still, the Yankees could use this series to gain ground as the stretch run plays out.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox lurk in third place, just a half-game behind New York. They are also one spot behind the Yankees in the AL wild-card standings, with the Seattle Mariners 4.5 games behind them in the third and final slot.
New York will play Boston next weekend at Fenway Park, which presents another opportunity to gain separation in the AL East standings. After that, the Yankees will play losing teams for the remainder of the regular season.
Right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler will start for the Yankees against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman on Friday night.
