Yankees Make Major DJ LeMahieu Decision Before Padres Game

Amid a three-game losing streak and concerning offensive inconsistency, at least the New York Yankees have good news on the DJ LeMahieu front.

The Yankees announced before Tuesday’s game against the San Diego Padres that LeMahieu has reported to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the final part of his rehab assignment. The two-time batting champion hasn’t played this season after suffering a calf injury early in spring training.

A hip ailment temporarily derailed LeMahieu’s rehab stint at Double-A Somerset. However, he has since recovered and could potentially rejoin the Yankees as early as this weekend.

LeMahieu went 7-for-16 with a home run, three RBI, and a 1.188 OPS across 18 plate appearances at Double-A.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Monday that LeMahieu could see extended action at second base upon returning. Jazz Chisholm Jr. strained his oblique last week and is likely out until June.

LeMahieu won three Gold Gloves as the Colorado Rockies’ starting second baseman from 2012-18. However, he’s mostly played first and third base since 2022; he hasn’t seen action at second base since July 5, 2023.

It is unclear if LeMahieu will be the full-time second baseman in Chisholm’s absence, or if he’ll also see action at third. Oswaldo Cabrera, who won the starting third base job following LeMahieu’s spring injury, is hitting .261 with a home run, eight RBI, and a .330 on-base percentage over 97 plate appearances.

Cabrera is starting at third base against the Padres on Tuesday night. Rookie infielder Jorbit Vivas, who hit .143 with three walks against three strikeouts in his first 10 plate appearances, is hitting ninth and manning second.

The Yankees have lost three straight and are only three games above .500.
